This fine, handy dandy lever that is quite useful for parking on hills has decided it is not going to function anymore.

I had the parking brake on, but I did a dumb and backed up with it set . Only when I realized the lever was still up and my brakes weren’t even making a peep did I realize I had a problem.

It ratchets just fine, the car detects the parking brake is on, and the cable moves just fine... but the rear brakes do absolutely nothing at all. Testing on a light incline with the car set to neutral confirms my suspicions.

Maybe that explains why the last time I did my pads and rotors the rear brakes looked completely untouched.

Further investigation is required. Any Oppos here experienced with late 90s Legacies that might have an idea where the problem lies?

It sounds like the problems is that it’s broken.

I’m going to have to agree.

You see, at one time the brake worked. Later, at another point in time, it didn ’t.

There’s the problem.

I think the solution is to fix it.

I’m sorry but you r Subaru has reached the point in it’s life where it wants to be put out to pasture. Some couldn’t wait and got out early because they had leaky heart valves. The rest make it by way of salt eating their skin and bones or every little thing breaking eventually.

It’s funny none of my Subarus ever had rear drums. So I have no Subaru specific fixes. Most drums have a self adjuster that is actuated when you reverse and press the brakes. My guess is that it has adjusted itself so that the shoes are always engaged now. Find a video on Youtube about adjusting drum brakes and see if you can reverse it. If it’s not that then a piece of the hardware got bent and the shoes are wedged most likely.

You could always try putting in on flat ground, in neutral, with the parking brake off and gently rocking it back and forth to try and unwedge the shoe.

P.S. There is a dude that lives near me that’s got a second gen Loyale with open headers and it sounds divine. Gotta love those Oregon mountain folk.

Ju st needs to be adjusted - my old Nissan pickup did the same thing after I had rear brakes done and they forgot to make sure the parking break worked.

These have rear disc brakes, no fiddling with adjusters on drum brakes here.

I had to fiddle with them on an ‘06 Camry which already had a busted spring replaced. That was great fun... when the adjustment wheel is located in a spot only accessible by Tool Tetris(tm).

Yes, yes. In my experience, having a repaired item tends to be the side effect of said fixing.

I also recommend that a fix should   repair the problem of it being broken.

She still screams going up an on ramp onto 95, so there’s still some life left in her.

Maybe she just doesn’t wanna stop anymore.
